What is Oysco D (calcium and vitamin D combination)?

Calcium is a mineral that is found naturally in foods. Calcium is necessary for many normal functions of your body, especially bone formation and maintenance.

Vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the functioning of calcium in the body.

Calcium and vitamin D combination is used to prevent or to treat a calcium deficiency.

Calcium and vitamin D combination may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Oysco D (calcium and vitamin D combination)?

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have:

  • kidney disease;

  • past or present kidney stones;

  • heart disease;

  • cancer;

  • high levels of calcium in your blood;

  • circulation problems; or

  • a parathyroid gland disorder.

Do not take calcium and vitamin D without your doctor's advice if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby. Your dose needs may be different during this time.

How should I take Oysco D (calcium and vitamin D combination)?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Take the calcium and vitamin D regular tablet with a full glass of water.

Take this medicine with food that is not high in fiber (such as bran).

The chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.

Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Oysco D (calcium and vitamin D combination) side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have signs of too much calcium in your body, such as:

  • stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite;

  • increased thirst or urination;

  • muscle pain or weakness, joint pain; or

  • confusion, and feeling tired or restless.

Common side effects may include:

  • an irregular heartbeat;

  • nausea, constipation;

  • weakness, drowsiness, headache;

  • dry mouth, or a metallic taste in your mouth; or

  • muscle or bone pain.

What are some other side effects of this drug?

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

  • Upset stomach or throwing up.
  • Hard stools (constipation).
