Moxifloxacin Ophthalmic

Your doctor will tell you how much of moxifloxacin to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to. moxifloxacin is not for long-term use.

To use the eye drops:

• First, wash your hands. Tilt the head back and pressing your finger gently on the skin just beneath the lower eyelid, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close the eyes. Do not blink. Keep the eyes closed for 1 or 2 minutes to allow the medicine to come into contact with the infection.
• If you think you did not get the drop of medicine into your eye properly, repeat the directions with another drop.
• Immediately after using the eye drops, wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them.
• To keep the medicine as germ free as possible, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface (including the eye). Also, keep the container tightly closed.

To help clear up your eye infection completely, keep using moxifloxacin for the full time of treatment, even if your symptoms have disappeared and even if you feel better after the first few doses. Your infection may not clear up if you stop using the medicine too soon. Do not miss any doses.

Dosing

The dose of moxifloxacin will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of moxifloxacin. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

• For ophthalmic dosage form (eye drops):
  • For bacterial conjunctivitis:
    • Adults and children—Put one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of moxifloxacin, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.

• It is used to treat eye infections.

• Tell all of your health care providers that you take moxifloxacin. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
• Use care when driving or doing other tasks that call for clear eyesight.
• Do not use longer than you have been told. A second infection may happen.
• Very bad and sometimes deadly allergic reactions have rarely happened with other forms of this medicine as well as drugs like this one. Talk with the doctor.
• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks of using moxifloxacin while you are pregnant.
• Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about any risks to your baby.

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

• Eye irritation.
• Short-term pain after use.
• Dry eyes.
• More tears.

• Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride

Moxifloxacin is a DNA gyrase inhibitor, and also inhibits topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) is an essential bacterial enzyme that maintains the superhelical structure of DNA. DNA gyrase is required for DNA replication and transcription, DNA repair, recombination, and transposition; inhibition is bactericidal.

Absorption

Minimal systemic absorption; resulting serum concentration was 0.02% of that achieved with oral formulation

Surgical (ophthalmic) prophylaxis

Based on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Surgical Infection Society (SIS), and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) guidelines for antimicrobial prophylaxis in surgery, moxifloxacin (ophthalmic) is recommended for ophthalmic surgical prophylaxis.

Moxeza ophthalmic solution: There are no contraindications listed in manufacturer's labeling

Vigamox: Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any component of the formulation

There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer's labeling. However, dosage adjustment unlikely due to low systemic absorption.

• Discuss specific use of drug and side effects with patient as it relates to treatment. (HCAHPS: During this hospital stay, were you given any medicine that you had not taken before? Before giving you any new medicine, how often did hospital staff tell you what the medicine was for? How often did hospital staff describe possible side effects in a way you could understand?)

• Patient may experience short-term pain, watery eyes, or dry eyes. Have patient report immediately to prescriber vision changes, eye pain, or severe eye irritation (HCAHPS).

• Educate patient about signs of a significant reaction (eg, wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat). Note: This is not a comprehensive list of all side effects. Patient should consult prescriber for additional questions.

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

This medication is a quinolone antibiotic used for eye infections.

How to use Moxifloxacin Drops

For best results, use exactly as directed for the full time prescribed. Stopping this medication too soon may result in a relapse of the infection.

To apply eye drops, wash hands first. To avoid contamination, do not let the dropper tip touch any surface.

Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place the dropper directly over eye and instill the prescribed number of drops. Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining away from the eye. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the dropper.

If you are using other kinds of eye drops, wait at least five minutes before applying the other medications.

Do not wear contact lenses while you are using this medicine. Sterilize contact lenses according to manufacturer's directions and check with your doctor before using them.

Inform you doctor if your condition does not improve in 7 days.
