Moxeza

Moxeza is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (eye inflammation) caused by certain kinds of bacteria.

Moxeza belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolone antibiotics, which help to kill bacteria in the body by inhibiting a bacterial enzyme called DNA-gyrase.

This medication comes in the form of eye drops. One drop is instilled into the affected eyes(s) 2 times daily for 7 days.

Common side effects of Moxeza include eye irritation, fever, and eye inflammation.

Before receiving Moxeza, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you:

• are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
• are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription or non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Use Moxeza exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Moxeza comes in the form of eye drops.

Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days.

• Store Moxeza at 2°C- 25°C (36°F - 77°F). 
• Keep Moxeza and all medicines out of the reach of children.

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying moxifloxacin ophthalmic. Ask your doctor if contact lenses can be reinserted after application of the medication.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

To apply the eye drops:

• Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye with the tip down. Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze out a drop.

• Close your eyes for 2 or 3 minutes with your head tipped down, without blinking or squinting. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for about 1 minute, to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct.

• Use only the number of drops your doctor has prescribed. If you use more than one drop, wait about 5 minutes between drops.

• Wait at least 10 minutes before using any other eye drops your doctor has prescribed.

Do not touch the tip of the eye dropper or place it directly on your eye. A contaminated dropper can infect your eye, which could lead to serious vision problems.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic is most often used for 7 days in a row. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.

Do not use the eye drops if the liquid has changed colors or has particles in it. Call your pharmacist for new medicine.

Store at cool room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic (eye) solution is used to treat infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis. Moxifloxacin belongs to a group of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria that cause conjunctivitis.

This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.

If you think there has been an overdose, call your poison control center or get medical care right away. Be ready to tell or show what was taken, how much, and when it happened.

Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days.

Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared to the rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice.

The data described below reflect exposure to Moxeza® solution in 1263 patients, between 4 months and 92 years of age, with signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis. The most frequently reported adverse reactions were eye irritation, pyrexia and conjunctivitis, reported in 1-2% of patients.

Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility

Long-term studies in animals to determine the carcinogenic potential of moxifloxacin have not been performed.

Moxifloxacin was not mutagenic in four bacterial strains used in the Ames Salmonella reversion assay. As with other quinolones, the positive response observed with moxifloxacin in strain TA 102 using the same assay may be due to the inhibition of DNA gyrase. Moxifloxacin was not mutagenic in the CHO/HGPRT mammalian cell gene mutation assay. An equivocal result was obtained in the same assay when v79 cells were used. Moxifloxacin was clastogenic in the v79 chromosome aberration assay, but it did not induce unscheduled DNA synthesis in cultured rat hepatocytes. There was no evidence of genotoxicity in vivo in a micronucleus test or a dominant lethal test in mice.

Moxifloxacin had no effect on fertility in male and female rats at oral doses as high as 500 mg/kg/day, approximately 25,000 times the highest recommended total daily human ophthalmic dose. At 500 mg/kg orally there were slight effects on sperm morphology (head-tail separation) in male rats and on the estrous cycle in female rats.

Usual Adult Dose of Moxeza for Bacterial Conjunctivitis:

Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice a day (4 months or older).

Duration of therapy: 7 days
