Centany Overview
Centany is a prescription medication used to treat impetigo and other simple skin infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Centany belongs to a group of drugs called topical antibiotics, which are used directly on the skin to kill bacteria.
This medication comes in a skin ointment and is usually used 3 times a day.
Common side effects of Centany include itching, burning, and redness in the area where Centany is applied.

How should I use Centany (mupirocin topical)?
Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Do not take by mouth. Topical medicine is for use only on the skin. If this medicine gets in your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse with water.
Wash your hands before and after applying mupirocin topical.
Clean and dry the affected skin area. Use a cotton swab or gauze pad to apply a small amount of mupirocin topical as directed.
Do not spread mupirocin topical over large areas of skin.
Mupirocin topical is usually applied 3 times per day for 10 days. Use only a small amount of the medicine.
Use a sterile gauze pad to cover the treated skin. Do not cover treated areas with a bandage, plastic wrap, or other covering that does not allow air to circulate.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within 3 to 5 days, or if your skin condition gets worse.
Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the medicine tube tightly closed when not in use.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Warnings
Centany (mupirocin ointment, 2%) is not for ophthalmic use.
Adverse Reactions
The following local adverse reactions have been reported in connection with the use of Centany (mupirocin ointment, 2%): application site reactions and pruritus, each in 1% of patients; contact dermatitis and furunculosis, each in 0.7% of patients; and exfoliative dermatitis and rash, each in 0.3% of patients.

Along with its needed effects, mupirocin topical (the active ingredient contained in Centany) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking mupirocin topical:
Less common- Burning, stinging, or pain on the application site
- Blistering, crusting, irritation, itching, or reddening of the skin
- canker sores
- cracked, dry, scaly skin
- pain, swelling, tenderness, warmth on the skin
- sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or tongue or inside the mouth
- Abdominal or stomach tenderness
- cough
- difficulty with swallowing
- dizziness
- fast heartbeat
- fever
- hives or welts, itching, or skin rash
- large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
- puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
- redness of the skin
- severe abdominal or stomach cramps and pain
- tightness in the chest
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- watery and severe diarrhea, which may also be bloody
Some side effects of mupirocin topical may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:
