Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatric

Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of Helidac® in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Tetracycline may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth and slow down the growth of bones. bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline should not be given to children 8 years of age and younger unless directed by the child's doctor.

Geriatric

Although appropriate studies on the relationship of age to the effects of Helidac® therapy have not been performed in the geriatric population, no geriatric-specific problems have been documented to date. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related kidney, liver, or heart problems, which may require caution and an adjustment in the dose for patients receiving Helidac®.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy Category Explanation
All Trimesters D Studies in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. However, the benefits of therapy in a life threatening situation or a serious disease, may outweigh the potential risk.

Breast Feeding

Studies in women breastfeeding have demonstrated harmful infant effects. An alternative to this medication should be prescribed or you should stop breastfeeding while using bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline.

Interactions with Medicines

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol

  • Ethanol

Using bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline with any of the following may cause an increased risk of certain side effects but may be unavoidable in some cases. If used together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline, or give you special instructions about the use of food, alcohol, or tobacco.

  • Dairy Food

Other Medical Problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

  • Allergy to aspirin or other salicylates or
  • Kidney disease, severe—Should not be used in patients with this condition.
  • Blood disorder (e.g., leukopenia, neutropenia), or history of or
  • Brain disease or
  • Central nervous system disease or—Use with caution. May make these conditions worse.
  • Kidney disease or
  • Liver disease—Use with caution. The effects may be increased because of slower removal of metronidazole and tetracycline from the body.

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

  • bloody or black, tarry stools

  • nausea

  • Burning, prickling, or tingling sensations

Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

  • Burning or itching around the anus
  • constipation
  • general feeling of discomfort or illness
  • loss of appetite
  • nervousness
  • trouble sleeping

Uses of Bismuth Subsalicylate, Metronidazole, and Tetracycline

  • It is used to treat or prevent GI (gastrointestinal) ulcers caused by infection.

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Bismuth Subsalicylate, Metronidazole, and Tetracycline?

  • If you have an allergy to bismuth, metronidazole, salicylates, tetracycline, or any other part of bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
  • If you have kidney disease.
  • If you have taken disulfiram within the past 2 weeks.
  • If you drink alcohol or take any drugs that have alcohol.
  • If you are taking penicillin.
