Used as a pediculicide; lacks ovicidal activity.1

In vitro studies indicate benzyl alcohol inhibits closure of louse respiratory spiracles, which allows the lotion vehicle to obstruct the spiracles and cause louse asphyxiation and death.1

Because of the mechanism of action, resistance to benzyl alcohol not expected to develop in lice.2 5
