Besifloxacin

Besifloxacin is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pinkeye), an infection of the eye. Besifloxacin belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. These work by killing the bacteria that cause infection. 

This medication comes as an eye drop and is usually applied into the eyes 3 times a day for 7 days. 

Common side effects of besifloxacin include eye redness, pain, and itching.

Besifloxacin can also cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how besifloxacin affects you.

Besifloxacin is part of the drug class:

• Opthalmic Fluoroquinolones

• It is used to treat eye infections.

• If you have an allergy to besifloxacin or any other part of besifloxacin.
• If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

This medicine may interact with other drugs or health problems.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take this medicine with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

• Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
• Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.

Inhibits both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is an essential bacterial enzyme required for DNA replication, transcription, and repair. Topoisomerase IV is an essential bacterial enzyme required for decatenation during cell division. Inhibition effect is bactericidal.

Store between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Protect from light.

Adverse events were observed in some animal reproduction studies. Systemic concentrations of besifloxacin following ophthalmic administration are low. If ophthalmic agents are needed during pregnancy, the minimum effective dose should be used in combination with punctual occlusion for 3 to 5 minutes after application to decrease potential exposure to the fetus (Samples 1988).
