Utrona-C Drug Class

Proper Use of hyoscyamine, methenamine, methylene blue, phenyl salicylate, and sodium phosphate

This section provides information on the proper use of a number of products that contain hyoscyamine, methenamine, methylene blue, phenyl salicylate, and sodium phosphate. It may not be specific to Utrona-C. Please read with care.

Take this medicine for the full time of treatment, even if you begin to feel better. Also, keep your appointments with your doctor for check-ups so that your doctor will be better able to tell you when to stop taking this medicine.

Drink extra fluids after you take this medicine so you will pass more urine.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For oral dosage form (tablets):
    • For treatment of symptoms of urinary tract infection or diagnostic procedure:
      • Adults—One tablet four times a day
      • Children 7 years of age and older—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
      • Children 6 years of age and younger—Use is not recommended.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.

Utrona-C Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Blurred vision
  • dizziness
  • rapid pulse

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Utrona-C?

For all patients taking Utrona-C (methenamine/sodium phosphate/phenyl salicylate/methylene blue/hyoscyamine):

  • If you have an allergy to methenamine, sodium biphosphate, phenyl salicylate, methylene blue, hyoscyamine, or any other part of this medicine.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
  • If you are taking or have recently taken any drugs for mental or mood problems like depression. There are many drugs that must not be taken with Utrona-C. Talk with your doctor if you are not sure.

Children:

  • If your child is younger than 6 years of age. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 6 years of age.

This medicine may interact with other drugs or health problems.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take Utrona-C with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

How is this medicine (Utrona-C) best taken?

Use this medicine as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • Take with or without food.
  • Take with a full glass of water.
  • Drink lots of noncaffeine liquids unless told to drink less liquid by your doctor.
  • Do not take antacids or drugs for loose stools (diarrhea) within 1 hour of Utrona-C.
  • If you also take ketoconazole, take it at least 2 hours before you take this medicine.
  • To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses.
  • Keep using Utrona-C (methenamine/sodium phosphate/phenyl salicylate/methylene blue/hyoscyamine) as you have been told by your doctor or other health care provider, even if you feel well.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

  • Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
  • If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
  • Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

If OVERDOSE is suspected

If you think there has been an overdose, call your poison control center or get medical care right away. Be ready to tell or show what was taken, how much, and when it happened.

How do I store and/or throw out Utrona-C?

  • Store at room temperature.
  • Protect from light.
  • Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom.
  • Keep lid tightly closed.
  • Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.
