Uses For tolnaftate

Tolnaftate belongs to the group of medicines called antifungals. It is used to treat some types of fungus infections. It may also be used together with medicines taken by mouth for fungus infections.

Tolnaftate is available without a prescription.

Precautions While Using tolnaftate

If your skin problem does not improve within 4 weeks, or if it becomes worse, check with your health care professional.

To help prevent reinfection after the period of treatment with tolnaftate, the powder or spray powder form of tolnaftate may be used each day after bathing and carefully drying the affected area.

What is the most important information I should know about tolnaftate topical?

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using tolnaftate topical?

You should not use tolnaftate topical if you are allergic to it.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to use this medicine if you have other medical conditions.

It is not known whether tolnaftate topical will harm an unborn baby. Do not use this medicine without a doctor's advice if you are pregnant.

It is not known whether tolnaftate topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medicine without a doctor's advice if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.

Tolnaftate topical dosing information

Usual Adult Dose for Tinea Corporis:

Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Adult Dose for Tinea Cruris:

Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Adult Dose for Tinea Pedis:

Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Adult Dose for Tinea Versicolor:

Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Tinea Corporis:

2 years or older: Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Tinea Cruris:

2 years or older: Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Tinea Pedis:

2 years or older: Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Tinea Versicolor:

2 years or older: Apply to the affected area once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.

What other drugs will affect tolnaftate topical?

It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on topically applied tolnaftate. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Overdose

This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

Do not share this medication with others.

This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection unless told to do so by your doctor. A different medication may be necessary in those cases.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed.
