Spiriva Interactions

Tell your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary drugs you're taking, especially:

  • Amiodarone (Cordarone)
  • Antihistamines
  • Any medications for irritable bowel disease, motion sickness, depression, high blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, ulcers, muscle spasms, or urinary problems
  • Atropine (AtroPen)
  • Cisapride (Propulsid)
  • Disopyramide (Norpace)
  • Dofetilide (Tikosyn)
  • Erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Erythrocin)
  • Eye drops
  • Ipratropium (Atrovent)
  • Moxifloxacin (Avelox)
  • Pimozide (Orap)
  • Procainamide (Procanbid, Pronestyl)
  • Quinidine (Quinidex)
  • Sotalol (Betapace)
  • Sparfloxacin (Zagam)
  • Thioridazine (Mellaril)

Spiriva and Other Interactions

Spiriva may cause blurred vision and dizziness.

Don't drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine will affect you.

Spiriva and Alcohol

Consuming alcohol can increase your risk of experiencing certain side effects.

Limit the amount of alcoholic beverages you drink while taking Spiriva. Talk to your doctor about this possible interaction.

Other Requirements

Tiotropium Capsules

  • Do not store tiotropium capsules in the HandiHaler device.
  • Store tiotropium capsules in the sealed blister package at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20° to 25°C).
  • Keep tiotropium capsules away from heat and cold (do not freeze).
  • Store tiotropium capsules in a dry place. Throw away any unused tiotropium capsules that have been open to air.
  • Keep the HandiHaler, tiotropium capsules, and all medicines out of the reach of children.

Tiotropium Inhaler

  • Do not use the inhaler after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and on the inhaler.
  • Keep the inhaler and all medicines out of the reach of children.
  • Store tiotropium inhaler at Room Temperature between 59ºF to 86ºF (15ºC to 30ºC).
  • Do not freeze your tiotropium cartridge and inhaler.
  How to care for your inhaler: Clean the mouthpiece including the metal part inside the mouthpiece with a damp cloth or tissue only, at least once a week. Any minor discolouration in the mouthpiece does not affect the performance of your inhaler. If necessary, wipe the outside of your inhaler with a damp cloth.

Special Populations Renal Function Impairment

Reduced clearance and increased plasma concentrations may occur.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to ipratropium, tiotropium, or any component of the formulation

Canadian labeling: Additional contraindications (not in US labeling): Hypersensitivity to atropine or its derivatives
