Mechanism of Action

Collagen-degrading enzyme; has high specificity for native and denatured collagen; digests collagen in necrotic tissue but not in healthy tissue; does not act on fibrin, fat, keratin or muscle

No allergic sensitivity or toxic reactions have been noted in clinical use when used as directed. However, one case of systemic manifestations of hypersensitivity to collagenase in a patient treated for more than one year with a combination of collagenase and cortisone has been reported.

What is collagenase topical (santyl)?

Collagenase is an enzyme that breaks down collagen in damaged tissues within the skin and helps the body generate new healthy tissue. Collagen is a type of protein that connects and supports fibers in body tissues such as skin, tendons, muscles, and bone.

Collagenase topical (for the skin) is applied to severe burns or skin ulcers to help remove dead skin tissue and aid in wound healing.

The enzymes in collagenase topical may increase your risk of a bacterial infection in your blood stream. Call your doctor at once if you have any signs of infection such as fever, chills, rapid heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or feeling very ill.

  • If you have an allergy to collagenase or any other part of Santyl (collagenase (topical)).
  • If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
