Pro-Pen-G Overview

Penicillin G potassium is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections that affect the blood, heart, lungs, joints, and genital areas. Penicillin G potassium belongs to a group of drugs called penicillin antibiotics, which stop the growth of bacteria in the body.

This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV), the muscle (IM), the lining of the lungs, or the spine (IT) by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects include an allergic reaction, skin rash, and itching of the skin.

Pro-Pen-G Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of penicillin G potassium, salt substitutes containing potassium should be avoided.

Pro-Pen-G and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Penicillin G potassium falls into category B. There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with penicillin G potassium. But in animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Pro-Pen-G and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Penicillin G potassium has been detected in human breast milk. Because of the possibility for adverse reactions in nursing infants from this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or to stop use of penicillin G potassium. The importance of the drug to the mother should be considered.

Indications

Penicillin G Procaine is indicated for the treatment of:


1.   Cattle and sheep - bacterial pneumonia (shipping fever) caused by Pasteurella multicoda.

2.   Swine - erysipelas caused by Erysipelothrix insidiosa.

3.   Horses - strangles caused by Streptococcus equi.

Restricted Drug (California) - Use Only as Directed.

The suspension should be administered by deep intramuscular injection within the fleshy muscles of the hip, rump, round or thigh, or into the neck, changing the site for each injection.  Do not inject subcutaneously, into a blood vessel, or near a major nerve.

Use a 16 or 18 gauge needle, 1.5 inches long.  The needle and syringe should be washed thoroughly before use.  The needle and syringe should then be sterilized by placing in boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes.

The injection site should be washed with soap and water and painted with a germicide such as tincture of iodine or 70% alcohol.  The product should then be administered by using the following procedure:

1.   Warm the vial to room temperature and shake thoroughly to ensure uniform suspension.

2.   Wipe the rubber stopper on top of the vial with a piece of absorbent cotton soaked in 70% alcohol.

3.   Inject air into the vial for easier withdrawal.

4.   After filling the syringe, make sure the needle is empty by pulling back the plunger of the syringe until a small air bubble appears.  Then detach the needle from syringe.

5.   Insert the needle deep into the muscle, attach the syringe and needle and insert it into a different location.

6.   Inject the dose slowly.  Do not massage the site of injection.

7.   Not more than 10 mL should be injected into one location.

Daily treatment should be continued for at least 48 hours after temperature has returned to normal and all other signs of infection have subsided.  Animals treated  with Penicillin G Procaine Injectable Suspension should show noticeable improvement within 36 to 48 hours.





Storage and Handling

Penicillin G Procaine Injectable Suspension should be stored in a cold room temperature between (2 degrees and 8 degrees C) (36 degrees - 46 degrees F).  Avoid freezing the product.
