Side effects

Temporary discomfort of the eye, blurred vision, watery eyes, headache, drowsiness, or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: eye pain/swelling/discharge, increased eye sensitivity to light, vision changes, slow/irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, mental/mood changes, tiredness, swelling of the ankles/feet, sudden/unexplained weight gain.Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: trouble breathing, chest/jaw/left arm pain, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, confusion.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Overdose

This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If swallowing or overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. If this product is accidentally swallowed, you may experience symptoms such as trouble breathing, slow/irregular heartbeat.

  • nausea
  • nervousness
  • pain in forehead
  • pain or discomfort in arms, jaw, back, or neck
  • pain, swelling, or redness in joints
  • pounding in the ears
  • puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  • redness, pain, swelling, or itching of the eye, eyelid, or inner lining of eyelid
  • shortness of breath
  • skin rash

  • tightness in chest
  • unusual tiredness or weakness

  • dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position suddenly

  • swelling of face, fingers, feet, or lower legs

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and use the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What should I avoid while using metipranolol ophthalmic?

Metipranolol ophthalmic can cause blurred vision. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be able to see clearly.

Metipranolol ophthalmic is sometimes given together with other eye medications. Do not use any other eye medication unless your doctor has prescribed it for you. If you use another eye medication, use it at least 10 minutes before or after using metipranolol ophthalmic. Do not use the medications at the same time.

Usual Adult Dose for Intraocular Hypertension

One drop in the affected eye(s) twice a day

Comments:
-If intraocular pressure is not at a satisfactory level on this regimen, use of more frequent administration or a larger dose is not known to be of benefit.
-Concomitant therapy to lower intraocular pressure can be initiated with pilocarpine, epinephrine, or acetazolamide.

Use: Treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open angle glaucoma

Metipranolol ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings

This drug should be used during pregnancy only if the benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. US FDA pregnancy category: C

Animal studies have shown an increase in fetal resorption, fetal death, and delayed development when administered orally. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. US FDA pregnancy category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
