What Is Liquigen?

Medium chain triglycerides is a medical food derived from fatty acids and safflower oil, a polyunsaturated fat.

Medium chain triglycerides is for dietary use in people whose bodies cannot digest certain foods properly. This includes people who are gluten or lactose intolerant, or who have unintended weight loss or need increased calories for other medical reasons.

Medium chain triglycerides does not contain protein or carbohydrates.

Medium chain triglycerides may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to medium chain triglycerides.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to use this product if you have any type of severe liver problems such as:

  • cirrhosis or other liver disease;
  • high blood pressure inside the liver;
  • brain or nervous system complications caused by severe liver damage; or
  • if you have had a "portacaval shunt" placed in your body.

Liquigen Interactions

Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.

Other drugs may interact with medium chain triglycerides, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.

Uses of Liquigen

  • Medium chain triglyceride oil is used as a diet aid.
  • It may be used if you have malabsorption syndrome.
  • It may be used in a ketogenic diet.

What are some things I need to know or do while I take Liquigen?

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take Liquigen. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks of using this medicine while you are pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about any risks to your baby.

How is this medicine (Liquigen) best taken?

Use Liquigen as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • Follow what your doctor has told you to do.
  • Some brands of this medicine may be mixed with food or drink. Check with the pharmacist if you have questions.
  • Some brands of Liquigen are best taken chilled. Check with the pharmacist if you have questions.
  • Some of these drugs need to be shaken before use. Be sure you know if this product needs to be shaken before using it.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

  • Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
  • If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
  • Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

How do I store and/or throw out Liquigen?

  • Some brands of Liquigen need to be stored in a refrigerator. Some brands of this medicine need to be stored at room temperature. If you have questions about how to store Liquigen, talk with your pharmacist.
  • After opening, be sure you know how long the product is good for and how to store it. Ask the doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.
