What is balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin?
Balsam Peru increases blood flow to a wound area, and also helps fight bacteria.
Castor oil prevents skin cells from breaking down, which aids in wound healing.
Trypsin helps to strip away (or slough off) damaged skin cells.
Balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin topical (for the skin) is a combination medicine used to treat bed sores and other skin ulcers. This medication can help promote healing and relieve pain caused by these conditions.
Balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin?
You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to balsam Peru, castor oil, or trypsin.
This medicine is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.
It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I use balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin?
Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Do not take by mouth. Topical medicine is for use only on the skin. Do not get this medicine in your eyes or nose. Avoid inhaling the spray.
Wash your hands before and after applying this medicine.
Apply a thin layer of medication to the wound. Balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin is usually applied 2 or 3 times daily. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Shake the spray form of this medicine before each use. Hold the can about 12 inches from your skin and spray enough medicine to coat the wound.
After applying the medicine, you may cover the wound with a bandage dressing, or leave the wound open to the air. Your doctor will tell you whether you should cover the wound or not.
If you need to remove the medicine, gently wash it off with water.
Some forms of this medicine are flammable. Do not use near open flame or while you are smoking. Do not smoke until the medicine has completely dried on your skin.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit. Get your prescription refilled before you run out of medicine completely.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not allow the medicine to freeze.
Keep the spray canister away from open flame or high heat. The canister may explode if it gets too hot. Do not puncture or burn an empty spray canister.
What other drugs will affect balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin?
It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on topically applied balsam Peru, castor oil, and trypsin. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Granulex?
- If you have an allergy to trypsin, balsam peru, castor oil, or any other part of Granulex (trypsin, balsam peru, and castor oil spray).
- If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
This medicine may interact with other drugs or health problems.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take this medicine with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
How is this medicine (Granulex) best taken?
Use this medicine as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.
- Do not take Granulex by mouth. Use on your skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes (may burn).
- Clean affected part before use. Make sure to dry well.
- Wash your hands before and after use. Do not wash your hands after use if putting this on your hand.
- You may need to cover the treated area with a bandage or dressing. Talk with the doctor.
- Shake well before use.
- Hold spray upright and about 12 inches from the treated part.
- Spray and coat wound quickly.
- Do not breathe in this medicine. Breathing in Granulex may cause harm or death.
What do I do if I miss a dose?
- Put on a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
- If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
- Do not put on 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
How do I store and/or throw out Granulex?
- Store at room temperature. Do not freeze.
- Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom.
- Protect from heat or open flame.
- Protect from heat and sunlight. Do not puncture or burn even if it seems empty.
- Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
- Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.
