What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Exoderm (salicylic acid and sodium thiosulfate topical)?

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to salicylic acid, sodium thiosulfate, or sulfa drugs.

It is not known whether salicylic acid and sodium thiosulfate topical will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine.

It is not known whether salicylic acid and sodium thiosulfate topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What should I avoid while using Exoderm (salicylic acid and sodium thiosulfate topical)?

Do not take by mouth. This medicine is for use only on the skin. Do not use this medicine on open wounds or on scraped, irritated, or damaged skin. If this medicine gets in your eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina, rinse with water.

Avoid using other medications on the areas you treat with salicylic acid and sodium thiosulfate topical unless your doctor tells you to.

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Exoderm?

  • If you have an allergy to sodium thiosulfate, salicylic acid, or any other part of Exoderm (sodium thiosulfate and salicylic acid).
  • If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

This medicine may interact with other drugs or health problems.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take this medicine with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

What are some things I need to know or do while I take Exoderm?

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take Exoderm. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • Certain acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can rarely cause very bad and sometimes life-threatening allergic reactions or very bad irritation. Before first use, you may need to follow certain steps to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction. Use this medicine as you were told by the doctor or read the package label. Talk with the doctor.
  • Do not put on irritated skin.
  • If you use Exoderm too often, your skin problem may become worse.
  • Talk with your doctor before you use other drugs or products on your skin.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks of using this medicine while you are pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about any risks to your baby.

How do I store and/or throw out Exoderm?

  • Store at room temperature. Do not freeze.
  • Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom.
  • Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.
