Chlorhexidine is a prescription medication used to treat gingivitis, redness and swelling of gums, and to control gum bleeding. It is also used to help treat peridontitis, or gum disease. This medication belongs to a group of drugs called antimicrobials. It works by reducing bacteria in the mouth.

Chlorhexidine comes as an oral rinse. Use chlorhexidine rinse regularly, as directed by your dentist, in addition to daily brushing. Spit out after use. Chlorhexidine rinse should not be swallowed. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwashes immediately after rinsing with chlorhexidine.

Chlorhexidine also comes as a dental chip. It is inserted by your dentinst into the gum pocket at most once every three months.

Common side effects of the rinse include tooth discoloration, tartar buildup, and altered taste.

Take chlorhexidine exactly as prescribed.

Chlorhexidine comes in a oral rinse and a dental chip. Recommended use for oral solution is twice daily oral rinsing for 30 seconds, morning and evening after toothbrushing. Chlorhexidine rinse should not be swallowed, and should be spit out after use. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwashes immediately after rinsing with chlorhexidine. Do not brush teeth or eat immediately after rinsing with chlorhexidine.

The dental chip is inserted by your dentist into the gum pocket at most once every three months. Patients should avoid dental floss at the site of chip insertion for 10 days after placement, because flossing might dislodge the chip. All other oral hygiene may be continued as usual. There are no restrictions in regards to eating. Notify your dentisit as soon as possible if the chip falls out of place.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of chlorhexidine at the same time.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The recommended dose of chlorhexidine rinse for the treatment of treat gingivitis, redness and swelling of gums, and to control gum bleeding is 15ml (marked in cap) twice a day.

If you or someone you know swallows chlorhexidine, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

Chlorhexidine can cause a rare but serious allergic reaction that may be life-threatening. Get emergency medical help if you have: hives, severe skin rash; wheezing, difficult breathing; cold sweats, feeling light-headed; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

You should not use chlorhexidine topical if you are allergic to it.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to use this medicine if you have any allergies to food, dyes, animals, or medicines.

It is not known whether chlorhexidine topical will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.

It is not known whether chlorhexidine topical passes into breast milk or if it could affect the nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.

Be very careful when using chlorhexidine topical on a child younger than 2 months old. This medicine may cause severe irritation or chemical burns on a very young child.

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medicine, the following should be considered:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatric

Because of chlorhexidine's potential for causing excessive skin irritation and the risk of increased absorption through the skin, use in children less than 2 months of age is not recommended.

Geriatric

No information is available on the relationship of age to the effects of chlorhexidine in geriatric patients.

Interactions with Medicines

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.

Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol

Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Other Medical Problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

• Deep or open skin wounds—Some products should not be used for this condition. Use the medicine only as directed by your doctor.

Check with your doctor if your skin problem becomes worse. Call your doctor if you have skin irritation that does not go away, such as redness, itching, or burning in the area where you used this medicine.

This medicine should not be used for an extended period of time on large areas of the body. Follow your doctor's instructions about how long to use this medicine.

This medicine may cause serious and permanent injury when placed in the eyes, ears, or mouth. Carefully follow all instructions before using this medicine to prevent serious side effects.

This medicine may cause a brown stain on clothing when chlorine is also present. These stains may not be removed by regular washing. Use only non-chlorine products to wash or bleach fabrics exposed to this medicine. If the medicine has directions on the package about washing fabrics, follow them carefully.

The Chloraprep® and Hibistat® products contain large amounts of alcohol (70%) and are flammable. Do not use them or store them near a flame, heater, or electrical device. Do not use the medicine while you are smoking. Apply the medicine in a well-ventilated place.

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

• Blistering, burning, itching, peeling, skin rash, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation on the skin
• swelling of the face, hands, or feet
• trouble breathing
