IV Preparation

Reconstitute vial with 10 mL of sterile water for injection or 10 mL 0.9% NaCl and gently shake to dissolve

Final volume is ~11.4 mL

Must be further diluted; reconstituted solution is NOT for direct injection

Withdraw appropriate volume for dose (see list below) and add to 100 mL of 0.9% NaCl or D5W

Inspect for particulate matter and discoloration; color ranges from clear, colorless solutions to solutions that are clear and slightly yellow

Dose volume

  • 1.5 g (1 g/0.5 g): 11.4 mL (entire vial contents)
  • 750 mg (500 mg/250 mg): 5.7 mL
  • 375 mg (250 mg/125 mg): 2.9 mL
  • 150 mg (100 mg/50 mg): 1.2 mL

IV Administration

Infuse IV over 1 hr

Storage

Unreconstituted vials: Store refrigerated 2-8°C (36-46°F); protect from light

Reconstituted vials: May keep at room temperature for 1 hr before transfer and dilution in infusion bag

Diluted solution (IV bag): Stable for 24 hr when stored at room temperature or 7 days when refrigerated at 2-8°C (36-46°F)

Do not freeze

What Is Ceftolozane-tazobactam?

Ceftolozane is a cephalosporin antibiotic and tazobactam is a penicillin antibiotic. These medicines fight bacteria in the body.

Ceftolozane and tazobactam is a combination medicine used to treat certain bacterial infections of the stomach or urinary tract.

Ceftolozane and tazobactam may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to ceftolozane or tazobactam, or if you are allergic to similar antibiotics, such as:

  • penicillin antibiotics--amoxicillin, ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, ticarcillin, Amoxil, Moxatag, Augmentin, Principen, and others; or
  • cephalosporin antibiotics--cefdinir, cefprozil, cefuroxime, cephalexin, Ceftin, Cefzil, Keflex, Omnicef, and others.

To make sure ceftolozane and tazobactam is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis).

Ceftolozane and tazobactam is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

It is not known whether ceftolozane and tazobactam passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Ceftolozane & tazobactam Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with ceftolozane/tazobactam including the following:

  • serious allergic reactions. Contact your doctor or get medical help if you experience a rash, itching, hives, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • severe diarrhea. Contact your doctor if you experience frequent watery or bloody diarrhea. Severe diarrhea may occur more than 2 months after starting treatment with ceftolozane/tazobactam. This may be a sign of a more severe stomach problem.

 

Inform MD

Before taking ceftolozane/tazobactam, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions.  Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to ceftolozane/tazobactam or to any of its ingredients
  • are allergic to any cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics
  • have or have ever had kidney disease

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Ceftolozane & tazobactam Usage

This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV) by a healthcare professional.

It is important not to skip doses and to complete the full treatment, otherwise the infection may not go away and could become resistant to ceftolozane/tazobactam or other antibiotics in the future.

Ceftolozane & tazobactam Dosage

The dose your doctor recommends may be based on the following:

  • the condition being treated
  • other medical conditions you have
  • other medications you are taking
  • how you respond to this medication
  • your weight
  • your height
  • your age
  • your gender

Ceftolozane/tazobactam is given directly into a vein (IV) by a healthcare professional.

Your dose of ceftolozane/tazobactam is based on how well your kidneys are working, and your doctor will determine the appropriate dose.

Your doctor will determine the length of treatment based on the site of infection and how severe it is.

Ceftolozane & tazobactam Overdose

Since ceftolozane/tazobactam is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical setting, it is unlikely that an overdose will occur. However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention.
