What is Gelusil (aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone)?

Aluminum and magnesium are naturally occurring minerals. Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are antacids.

Simethicone allows gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines to come together more easily, which allows for easier passage of gas.

Aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone is a combination medicine used to treat heartburn, acid indigestion, upset stomach, and bloating caused by gas.

Aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about this medicine?

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

Avoid taking other medicines within 2 hours before or after you take aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb certain medicines, especially antibiotics.

How should I take this medicine?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

The chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.

Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure the liquid with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

An antacid is usually taken only for a short time until your symptoms clear up. Do not take this medicine for longer than 2 weeks in a row without medical advice. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while using aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not allow the liquid form of this medicine to freeze.

How is this medicine (Gelusil) best taken?

Use this medicine as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • Take Gelusil after meals and at bedtime or as you have been told by your doctor.
  • Chew well before swallowing.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

  • If you take this medicine on a regular basis, take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
  • If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
  • Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
  • Many times Gelusil is taken on an as needed basis. Do not take more often than told by the doctor.
