Precautions

The phenobarbital component may be habit forming and should not be administered to individuals known to be addiction prone or to those with a history of physical and/or psychological dependence upon drugs.

Phenobarbital may decrease the effect of anticoagulants, and necessitate larger dosages of the anticoagulant for optimal effect. When phenobarbital is discontinued the dosage of anticoagulant may have to be decreased.

Because belladonna alkaloids are highly anticholinergic drugs, atropine/hyoscyamine/phenobarbital/scopolamine meets Beers criteria as a medication that is potentially inappropriate for use in older adults.
