What are some things I need to know or do while I take Secretin?

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take secretin. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • You may need to stop taking some drugs like those that are used to lower stomach acid before getting this medicine. Talk with your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks of using secretin while you are pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about any risks to your baby.

Dosing Adult

Diagnosis of gastrinoma: IV: 0.4 mcg/kg as a single dose

Diagnosis of pancreatic dysfunction/Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography: IV: 0.2 mcg/kg as a single dose

Dosing Renal Impairment

There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer’s labeling.

Dosing Hepatic Impairment

There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer’s labeling.

Reconstitution

Add 8 mL NS to the 16 mcg vial to yield concentration of 2 mcg/mL; add 10 mL NS to the 40 mcg vial to yield a concentration of 4 mcg/mL; shake vigorously to ensure dissolution and use immediately. Discard any unused product.

Dietary Considerations

Patients should fast 12 to 15 hours prior to beginning the test.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, mild pancreatitis, upset stomach, burning in stomach or abdomen, diarrhea, and a warm sensation in the abdomen.[Ref]

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects have included increased heart rate, faintness, hypotension, and slow heart rate (57 bpm).[Ref]

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included headache, anxiety, numbness or tingling in extremities, possible seizure, and sedation.[Ref]

General

General side effects have included diaphoresis, clammy skin, increased oral secretions, and a warm sensation in the face.[Ref]

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects have included transient low O2 saturation and transient respiratory distress.[Ref]

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have included abdominal rash.[Ref]
