RabAvert purified chick embryo cell

Rabies vaccine, purified chick embryo, has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have not been reported. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Limited data indicate that fetal abnormalities have not been associated with rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccine should only be given to a pregnant woman if clearly needed. Because of the high mortality associated with untreated rabies virus infection, pregnancy is not considered a contraindication to postexposure prophylaxis and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the use of rabies vaccine. Preexposure prophylaxis may also be indicated during pregnancy if there is a high risk of exposure to rabies.
