Common side effects of phenylephrine ophthalmic solution include the following:
- eye pain and stinging
- blurred vision
- sensitivity to light
- increased blood pressure
- fast or irregular heart beat
Injectable:
Common side effects of phenylephrine for injection include the following:
- nausea
- vomiting
- headache

Phenylephrine Food Interactions
Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of phenylephrine, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.
Inform MD
Before taking phenylephrine, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:
- are allergic to phenylephrine or to any of its ingredients
- have thyroid problems
- have heart problems
- have high blood pressure
- have diabetes
- have trouble urinating because of an enlarged prostate gland
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Phenylephrine Usage
Take phenylephrine exactly as prescribed.
Topical:
This medication comes in solution form and is instilled directly into the eye. It is usually administered by a healthcare provider immediately prior to eye examinations or procedures.
Injectable:
This medication comes in solution form and is injected into a vein by a healthcare professional during surgical procedures.
What other drugs will affect phenylephrine?
Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine if you are also using any other drugs, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Some medicines can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when used together. Not all possible interactions are listed in this medication guide.
Taking this medicine with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can worsen these effects. Ask your doctor before taking phenylephrine with a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures.

Along with its needed effects, phenylephrine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking phenylephrine:
Incidence not known- Blurred vision
- chest pain or discomfort
- difficult or labored breathing
- dizziness
- fainting
- fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
- headache
- nausea or vomiting
- nervousness
- pain in the shoulders, arms, jaw, or neck
- pounding in the ears
- sweating
- tightness in the chest
- unusual tiredness
Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur while taking phenylephrine:
Symptoms of overdose- Feeling of fullness in the head
- pounding or rapid pulse
- tingling in the arms or legs
- vomiting
Some side effects of phenylephrine may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:
