Monistat 7 Overview

Monistat 7 is an over the counter medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections in adults and children 12 years of age and older. Monistat 7 belongs to a group of drugs called antifungals. These work by stopping the growth of yeast (fungus) that causes the infection.

This medication comes in a cream and is applied into the vagina at bedtime for 7 days in a row.

Common side effects of Monistat 7 include itching, burning and irritation of the skin.

 

Side Effects of Monistat 7

Miconazole may cause serious side effects including:

Allergic reactions.Tell your doctor or get emergency medical help right away if you have any of the symptoms below:

  • skin rash or hives
  • swelling of your face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat
  • trouble swallowing or breathing

The most common side effects of miconazole include:

  • diarrhea
  • change in taste
  • headache
  • upper stomach (abdominal) pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting

Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of miconazole. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

 

Monistat 7 Interactions

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Miconazole may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how miconazole works.

Especially tell your doctor if you take:

  • a diabetes medicine
  • phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek)
  • an ergot medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure if your medicine is an ergot medicine.
  • the blood thinner medicine warfarin sodium (Coumadin, Jantoven)

Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your doctor and pharmacist when you get a new medicine.

 

Monistat 7 Precautions

Do not use miconazole if you:

  • are allergic to miconazole (M-Zole, Monistat, Vusion)
  • are allergic to milk protein concentrate
  • are allergic to any of the ingredients in miconazole

Monistat 7 Food Interactions

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with miconazole and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit products with your doctor.

Monistat 7 and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if miconazole passes into your breast milk. Talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you use miconazole.

Monistat 7 Dosage

Take miconazole exactly as prescribed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The recommended dosing schedule for miconazole is the application of one 50 mg buccal tablet to the upper gum region once daily for 14 consecutive days.

 

Monistat 7 Overdose

If you take too much miconazole, call your local Poison Control Center or seek emergency medical attention right away.

How should I use Monistat 7 (miconazole vaginal)?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not take this medicine by mouth. It is for use only in your vagina.

Wash your hands before and after using miconazole vaginal.

Insert the tablet, suppository, or cream into the vagina using the applicator as directed.

You can use a sanitary napkin to prevent the medication from staining your clothing but do not use a tampon.

Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time, even during your menstrual period. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to miconazole vaginal.

If the infection does not clear up after you have finished one course of therapy, or if it appears to get worse, see your doctor. You may have another type of infection.

If this medication gets in your eyes, rinse with water.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
