Meningococcal vaccine C,Y-Hib-conj tetanus(PF) intramuscular

This vaccine is used for high-risk infants to help prevent serious, sometimes fatal infections caused by 2 different bacteria (Haemophilus influenzae type b and Neisseria meningitides groups C and Y). These infections are very serious and may cause severe problems (such as hearing loss, brain/nerve problems, paralysis, blindness, seizures, loss of limbs) even with proper antibiotic treatment. Therefore, preventing these infections through vaccination is very important.

This vaccine contains parts from the bacteria. It works by causing the body to produce its own protection (antibodies) against the bacteria.

This vaccine is not approved for use by children over 18 months of age or by adults.

This vaccine does not provide protection against all types of Neisseria meningitides. Another vaccine may be required. Ask your health care professional for more details.

How to use Meningococcal Vac C,Y-Hib (PF) Solution, Reconstituted (Recon Soln)

Read all vaccine information available from your health care professional before receiving the vaccine. If you have any questions, ask your health care professional.

This vaccine is given by injection into the muscle by a health care professional.

A series of 4 injections is needed to provide the best protection. They are usually given when the infant is aged 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 12 to 15 months. It is very important that your child receive all the injections ordered by the health care professional, or the vaccine may not work as well.

Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site may occur. Drowsiness, irritability/crying, loss of appetite, or fever may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell the health care professional promptly.

Infrequently, temporary symptoms such as fainting/dizziness/lightheadedness, vision changes, numbness/tingling, or seizure-like movements have happened after vaccine injections. Tell your health care professional right away if your child has any of these symptoms soon after receiving an injection. Sitting or lying down may relieve symptoms.

Remember that your health care professional has prescribed this vaccine because he or she has judged that the benefit to your child is greater than the risk of side effects. Many children receiving this vaccine do not have serious side effects.

Get medical help right away if your child has any very seriousseizures, unresponsiveness.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Before receiving this vaccination, tell your health care professional if your child is allergic to it; or to any other vaccines; or if your child has any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your health care professional for more details.

Before receiving this vaccine, tell the health care professional your child's medical history, especially of: vaccination history, blood disorders (such as bleeding problems, low platelets), history of a certain nerve problem (Guillain-Barre syndrome), weakened immune system (such as due to cancer, HIV, leukemia, lymphoma, radiation treatment), premature birth.

Drug interactions may change how your child's medications work or increase your child's risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products your child uses (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with the health care professional. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your child's doctor's approval.

Some products that may interact with this vaccine include: "blood thinners" (such as warfarin, heparins), corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone, prednisone), cancer chemotherapy, drugs that weaken the immune system (such as cyclosporine, tacrolimus).

Other vaccines may be given at the same time as this vaccine, but should be given with separate syringes and at different injection sites.

This vaccine may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including urine tests), possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all the health care professionals know your child has recently been vaccinated.

Missed Dose

It is important that your child receives each vaccination as scheduled. Be sure to ask when each dose should be received, and make a note on a calendar to help you remember.

Storage

Store in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
