What is the most important information I should know about sulfacetamide sodium topical?

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Sulfacetamide sodium topical side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how mild;

  • pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding;

  • new or worsening skin infection;

  • liver problems--nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

  • lupus-like syndrome--joint pain or swelling with fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, chest pain, vomiting, unusual thoughts or behavior, and patchy skin color; or

  • severe skin reaction--fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

Common side effects may include:

  • mild swelling, itching, or redness of treated skin;

  • dry skin; or

  • yellow discoloration of treated skin (may be a sign that you have applied too much of the medicine).

Uses of Klaron

  • It is used to treat bacterial infections.
  • It is used to treat pimples (acne).
  • It is used to treat skin irritation and dandruff.

How is this medicine (Klaron) best taken?

Use Klaron as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • Keep taking this medicine as you have been told by your doctor or other health care provider, even if you feel well.
  • Do not take Klaron by mouth. Use on your skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes (may burn).
  • Wash your hands before and after use. Do not wash your hands after use if putting this on your hand.
  • Clean affected part before use. Make sure to dry well.
  • Put a thin layer on the affected skin and rub in gently.
  • Shake well before use.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

  • Put on a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
  • If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
  • Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

Klaron Description

Each mL of Klaron® (sodium sulfacetamide lotion) Lotion, 10% contains 100 mg of sodium sulfacetamide in a vehicle consisting of edetic acid, hydroxyethyl cellulose, lauramide DEA, methylparaben, PEG-400 monolaurate, propylene glycol, purified water, silicone emulsion, sodium chloride, sodium metabisulfite, and xanthan gum.

Sodium sulfacetamide is a sulfonamide with antibacterial activity. Chemically, sodium sulfacetamide is N' -[(4-amino phenyl) sulfonyl] - acetamide, monosodium salt, monohydrate. The structural formula is:

Contraindications

KlaronLotion is contraindicated for use by patients having known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or any other component of this preparation (see WARNINGS).
