Uses of Cytoxan

  • It is used to treat cancer.
  • It is used to treat nephrotic syndrome.
  • It may be given to you for other reasons. Talk with the doctor.

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Cytoxan?

  • If you have an allergy to cyclophosphamide or any other part of Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide tablets).
  • If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
  • If you have any of these health problems: Bone marrow disease or urinary tract block.
  • If you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed.

This is not a list of all drugs or health problems that interact with this medicine.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take Cytoxan with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

What are some things I need to know or do while I take Cytoxan?

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take this medicine. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert or have clear eyesight until you see how Cytoxan affects you.
  • Very bad and sometimes deadly allergic side effects have rarely happened. Talk with your doctor.
  • Have blood work checked as you have been told by the doctor. Talk with the doctor.
  • Talk with your doctor before getting any vaccines. Use with this medicine may either raise the chance of an infection or make the vaccine not work as well.
  • You may bleed more easily. Be careful and avoid injury. Use a soft toothbrush and an electric razor.
  • You may have more of a chance of getting an infection. Wash hands often. Stay away from people with infections, colds, or flu. Some infections have been very bad and even deadly.
  • Very bad and sometimes deadly heart problems like heart failure have happened with Cytoxan. Talk with the doctor.
  • Other types of cancer may rarely happen later in life.
  • This medicine may affect how much of some other drugs are in your body. If you are taking other drugs, talk with your doctor. You may need to have your blood work checked more closely while taking this medicine with your other drugs.
  • Lung problems have happened with Cytoxan. Call your doctor right away if you have lung or breathing problems like trouble breathing, shortness of breath, or a cough that is new or worse.
  • This medicine can cause low sodium levels. Very low sodium levels can be life-threatening, leading to seizures, passing out, trouble breathing, or death. Talk with the doctor.
  • If you are 65 or older, use this medicine with care. You could have more side effects.
  • If you are a man and have sex with a female who could get pregnant, protect her from pregnancy during care and for at least 4 months after stopping Cytoxan. Use birth control that you can trust.
  • If you are a man and your sex partner gets pregnant while you take this medicine or within 4 months after your last dose, call your doctor right away.
  • This medicine may affect fertility. Fertility problems may lead to not being able to get pregnant or father a child. In both men and women, this may go back to normal but sometimes it may not. Talk with your doctor.
  • Periods may stop in women treated with Cytoxan. This may not go back to normal. Women treated with this medicine may go through menopause at a younger age than normal. Talk with your doctor.
  • This medicine may cause harm to the unborn baby or loss of the unborn baby if you take it while you are pregnant.
  • Use birth control that you can trust to prevent pregnancy while taking Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide tablets) and for up to 12 months after this medicine.
  • If you get pregnant while taking Cytoxan or within 12 months after your last dose, call your doctor right away.

What are some other side effects of Cytoxan?

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

  • Not hungry.
  • Loose stools (diarrhea).
  • Hair loss.
  • Upset stomach or throwing up.
  • Belly pain.
  • Change in color of skin.
  • Change in nails.
