Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly to determine your response to nicardipine.

The extended-release capsule does not dissolve in the stomach after swallowing. It slowly releases medicine as it passes through your small intestines. It is not unusual to see the capsule shell in the stool.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

You should not take this medicine if you have severe narrowing of the aortic valve in your heart (aortic stenosis).

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not crush, chew, break, or open an extended-release capsule. Swallow it whole.

You may have more severe or more frequent episodes of angina when you first start taking nicardipine, or whenever your doses are changed.

Your blood pressure will need to be checked often.

You may be given other heart or blood pressure medications during treatment with nicardipine.

Do not stop using any of your medications suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.

Store nicardipine at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

Overdose symptoms may include severe dizziness, confusion, and slurred speech.

• If you have an allergy to nicardipine or any other part of Cardene SR (nicardipine sustained-release capsules).
• If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
• If you have narrowing of the main artery from the heart (aorta) or very narrow heart valve (aortic stenosis).
• If you are breast-feeding. Do not breast-feed while you take this medicine.

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

• Dizziness.
• Flushing.
• Headache.
• Feeling tired or weak.

CARDENE is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug.

Because part of the effect of CARDENE is secondary to reduced afterload, the drug is also contraindicated in patients with advanced aortic stenosis. Reduction of diastolic pressure by any means in these patients may worsen rather than improve myocardial oxygen balance.
