Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatric
Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of ipratropium nasal spray in children younger than 6 years of age. Safety and efficacy have not been established.
Geriatric
No information is available on the relationship of age to the effects of ipratropium nasal spray in geriatric patients.
Pregnancy

Interactions with Medicines

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.
- Tiotropium
Using this medicine with any of the following medicines may cause an increased risk of certain side effects, but using both drugs may be the best treatment for you. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.
- Betel Nut
Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol
Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.
Other Medical Problems
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
- Bladder neck blockage or
- Enlarged prostate or
- Glaucoma, narrow-angle—Use with caution. May make these conditions worse.
- Kidney disease or
- Liver disease—Use with caution. This medicine has not been studied in patients with these conditions.
Atrovent Side Effects
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

- itching, redness, tearing, or other sign of eye irritation not present before use of this medicine or becoming worse during use

- nosebleeds
- redness, pain, or swelling of the eye, eyelid, or inner lining of the eyelid
- Pain or cramping in the abdomen or stomach
- painful or difficult urination
- Difficulty with swallowing
- dizziness
- fast heartbeat
- hives or welts
- itching
- large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
- puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
- redness of the skin
- skin rash
- tightness in the chest
- Nasal dryness
- nosebleeds
- Blurred vision
- dizziness
- eye redness or pain
- fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
- pain or cramping in the abdomen or stomach
- painful or difficult urination
- ringing or buzzing in the ears
- sore throat
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

What is Atrovent Nasal (ipratropium nasal)?
Ipratropium nasal (for the nose) works by reducing mucus secretions in the nose.
Ipratropium nasal is used to treat runny nose caused by seasonal allergies (hay fever). This medicine will not treat stuffy nose, sneezing, or cough.
Ipratropium nasal may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What other drugs will affect Atrovent Nasal (ipratropium nasal)?
Other drugs may interact with ipratropium nasal, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
Precautions
Before using ipratropium, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to tiotropium; or to atropine or other belladonna-type drugs; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type), difficulty urinating (for example, due to enlarged prostate).
Although unlikely, this drug may make you dizzy or blur your vision or cause other vision changes. Alcohol or marijuana can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially problems urinating or constipation.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

General
Ipratropium has been generally well-tolerated, and void of systemic effects when administered intranasally.[Ref]
Local
Local side effects have included blood-tinged mucus (17%), nasal dryness (10%), epistaxis (7%), and nasal irritation (2%).[Ref]
Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have included headache is reported in approximately 9% of the patients treated with the nasal spray. Dizziness has occurred infrequently.[Ref]
Hypersensitivity
Hypersensitivity side effects have included reports of allergic-type reactions including skin rash, angioedema of the throat, tongue, lips,and face, generalized urticaria, laryngospasm, and anaphylactic reactions.[Ref]
Ocular
Ocular side effects have included blurred vision and conjunctivitis after the medication came in contact with the eyes.[Ref]
Genitourinary
Genitourinary side effects have not been usually observed with the low doses given by nasal spray. Urinary retention has been reported occasionally in patients receiving larger doses by nebulizer. Caution may be warranted when using ipratropium in men with prostatic hypertrophy.[Ref]
Respiratory
Respiratory side effects have included pharyngitis and upper respiratory tract infection has been reported in 8% and 9% of patients, respectively.[Ref]
Cardiovascular
Cardiovascular side effects have included rare reports of tachycardia and palpitations.[Ref]
Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea and diarrhea.[Ref]
Dermatologic
Dermatologic side effects have included rare reports of skin rash.[Ref]
